Florence – Accademia Gallery Tour
Galleria Accademia Florence Tour
Accademia Florence: Learn about Michelangelo’s David and his Greatest Masterpieces
Come with our passionate, certified guide and explore the Galleria Accademia, Florence’s top art gallery (alongside the larger, less specialist Uffizi Gallery). What makes the Accademia Gallery so special is that it houses mostly Florentine artists’ work who lived between 1300 and 1600, including one of the most famous artistic masterpieces, Michelangelo’s David, along with some of his other exquisite sculptures.
On this tour of the Galleria dell’Accademia, you will have the opportunity to see and learn more about Michelangelo’s David – easily the most legendary marble sculpture in the world – and several more of his sculptures, including his statue of St Matthew, Pietá, and his four unfinished works referred to as ‘Prisoners‘or ‘Slaves’. Our expert local guides will also tell you more about his studies and sculpting techniques.
Florence is perhaps the most famous city in the world for classical art, and this is due to the city’s history as the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, inspiring the creations of many of art history’s greatest sculptors and painters, including Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Andrea del Sarto, and Paolo Uccello, just to name a few of them. The Galleria dell’Accademia is a specialist museum as it houses more Florentine artists’ work than the city’s larger Uffizi.

Tour Plan
Le Prigioni (Slaves)
Check Michelangelo’s “non-finito” (or incomplete) masterpieces, magnificent illustrations of the difficulty of the artist in carving out the figure from the block of marble and emblematic of the struggle of man to free the spirit from matter.
David
Listen to the history of the symbol of the Florentine Republic’s strength. Much like David facing Goliath, the Republic was in fact threatened by stronger states on all sides, so when David was placed outside the city government buildings in the Piazza della Signoria this connection solidified itself in the public’s mind.
Gipsoteca
Hall of Models (Gipsoteca Bartolini) contains a collection of various plaster-cast models made by sculptor Bartolini and Pampaloni in the 19th century. These plaster cast models were actually used to help give their ideas a shape before carving into the marble blocks.
Ratto Delle Sabine And Paintings
Listen to the history of Giambologna's masterpiece "Ratto delle Sabine" made from a single block of marble. The history dates back to the beginning of the Roman Empire! In this section of the museum you will also find some 14th century Florentine paintings, ranging between 1370 and 1420, masterpieces of late Gothic Florentine period.
